Data Warehouse Reporting & Analytics
What is data warehouse reporting & analytics?
DGIT’s enterprise data warehouse transforms raw data into actionable insights that empower researchers, faculty, and staff at UCLA Health Sciences to make empirically sound, strategic decisions.
By collecting, processing, and integrating data from multiple sources and different collection systems, the warehouse helps us create reports that enable collaboration and advancement in institutionally significant areas, from research to finance.
What is a data warehouse?
A data warehouse is a digital system for storing, organizing, and accessing large amounts of data. Just as a physical warehouse is organized to make merchandise fast and easy to find and ship, a data warehouse is organized to make information fast and easy to find and use.
How will data warehouse reporting and analytics benefit my work?
The data warehouse enhances work by providing access to massive amounts of quality data. Our technology brings all UCLA Health Sciences data—even data from different departments and collection systems—into one warehouse, making it possible to create reports that detect trends and patterns across several studies and disciplines.
We manage, update, and support the warehouse and provide our community with data access, reporting, analytics, and training, free of charge.
What kind of reports can I access?
Our data warehouse enables a variety of reporting and analytics solutions, including:
- Data visualizations and models
- Real-time queries
- Drillable reports
- Multidimensional analysis
How does the data warehouse work?
The data warehouse uses the extract, transform, load (ETL) process to turn raw data from disparate sources into useful formats, such as visualizations, reports, and dashboards.
How do I use the data warehouse for reporting and analytics?
DGIT’s Enterprise Data Team is developing the data warehouse as we speak. When it’s ready, we’ll provide you with reports and tools aligned with your specific needs.
Look forward to more details on using the data warehouse for financial decisions in January 2018.
To ask questions about the data warehouse or discuss a specific data project, please create a service request ticket with Data Warehouse Reporting and Analytics in the Short Description field. A member of the Enterprise Data Team will respond as soon as possible.
Additional resources and support
We’re happy to provide ad-hoc reports and analytics assistance, but we also plan to offer resources to help departments across UCLA Health Sciences access the data warehouse and create their own customized reports, dashboards, charts, and more.
These resources include:
Data warehouse training
We’ll provide the tools users need to get the most out of our data warehouse.
We’ll show you:
- How to bring data into the warehouse through the ETL process
- How to develop your own models
- How to create a data mart
Reporting and analytics training
We’ll offer training on analyzing and leveraging the warehouse data.
We’ll show you:
- How to use the reporting tools
- How to use the analytics tools
- Which data marts to access
- How to make data reports actionable
- How to present your findings
Data partnerships in action
Our Enterprise Data and Educational Technology Services (ETS) Teams have partnered in an effort to best leverage the educational data collected in our admissions and curriculum systems. These systems collect massive amounts of data, but we lack the mechanisms to put the information to use.
The Enterprise Data Team is now extracting data from the curriculum and admissions systems to create a data warehouse that will allow our leaders to analyze admissions trends over time, create academic performance models, and use the system data in many other new ways.
